Altrusa Partnering with Boys and Girls Club

Our Altrusa Club has partnered with The Boys & Girls Club in Marion for many projects. Our newest endeavor with them is to organize, research, and box books to be used at their new clubhouse which includes a brand new library for them. For years they have accumulated books from a variety of sources including our Altrusa Club. Unfortunately being underfunded and under staffed their books were in a state of disarray. In comes the Marion Altrusans!! Just like the Calvary.  Literacy is of upmost importance to us and to help the area children once more we volunteered our time and resources. We have been researching each book for the appropriate reading grade level, organizing, categorizing, and boxing well over 2,000 books. Altrusans Roselynn Fullmer, Phyllis Hendrix, Grace Teel, Mary Ann Doyle, Carolyn Hittenrauch and others have made new friends such as Captain Underpants and Matt Christopher and reacquainted themselves with a favorite Nancy Drew Mysteries . This project has been very addictive and such a joy.

Altrusa International of Marion has partnered with The Boys & Girls Club and Kohls for our annual "Dress for Success" project. This project is to help children who live with family or friends and do not always have the financial resources for new clothes and supplies for school.

The Marion Altrusans decided to purchase a new school outfit including underwear and a top and bottom for school age children in grades K- 8. We designate $100.00 per child for their school outfit. In keeping with our literacy goals, we also provide each child a backpack filled with their class supply requests. Our members contribute back packs and school supplies according to the published school supply lists from the area schools.

With a huge response from our membership, we were able to fill 16 backpacks. The children we outfitted were carefully chosen by the professional staff at The Boys and Girls Club. Each parent and/or guardian signed a release to allow the child to accompany our members on the shopping excursion to Kohl’s Department Store. Ten Altrusans were able to be personal shoppers for the big day. Each child received a book bag filled to overflowing with school supplies, age appropriate reading books, two outfits, socks, underwear and some even picked out jewelry or shoes. There was so much excitement as each child chose his or her outfits. Several could not believe how many things they could choose for $100.00!! Kohl’s was most generous with their discounts and assistance. We also were able to support our local library’s annual fundraiser with this project. The books we purchased were from the Friends of the Library Sale.
