Service Projects

District Fivers turned out on Make a Difference Day determined to REALLY “Make a Difference”. Some of the projects are listed below, others are highlighted in the picture captions.

Hamilton, Ohio

Members of the Altrusa International Inc. of Hamilton, Ohio participated in Make A Difference Day at Marcy Franciscan St. Raphael Social Service Agency. Two members folded and taped boxes to be filled with food for Thanksgiving for needy families. Other Altrusans organized medical record files. This enabled the Social Workers at St. Raphael‘s to quickly identify their clients when medical help is needed. Other members organized, sorted and filled shelves with medical supplies.

Monroe, Michigan

The Monroe club ―Make A Difference Day‖ project was to send about $400.00 worth of new and gently used books to Andrew Stevens English class in rural Mississippi. We sent a box of books earlier which were recom-mended by local teachers and our local Book Nook and sent the final two boxes on October 22nd. Andrew is an Eastern Michigan Graduate who works for Teach America. Through one of our Altrusa member‘s college sons we heard about how he needed books for a mini library for his classes. As with previous years, several boxes of used books were delivered to two local Laundromats.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Altrusa of Grand Rapids decided not to do a project together, but to do something independently on Make a Difference Day. As we talked about this possibility, we all realized most of us make a big difference every day in our homes, neighbor-hoods and within our communities. Some examples of the individual projects include: assisting a neighbor in a medical emergency, giving furniture to a family in need, helping her family sort through the belongings of a loved one who has passed and making a donation to the Children’s Food Basket program. These projects reflect what most of us do every day. Together, our individual projects do make a difference.

Greater Birmingham, Michigan

Our Altrusa Chapter of Greater Birmingham has chosen a two month Make a Difference Day project. During the months of October and November we are collecting gently used professional women's clothing to be donated to the women of Grace Centers of Hope, Pontiac. The clothing will be available to the women as they complete their program at GCOH and enter the workforce.

We are also sponsoring a Birthday Book event for the children from Grace Centers of Hope. Each month children who have a birthday during that month are given a new, wrapped book for their birthday. This project coincides with the literacy focus that GCOH and the Hands of Hope Childcare director encourages us.

Marion, Ohio

Altrusa International of Marion, Ohio has partnered with the Family Readiness Group of Alpha Company to collect items and money for postage to assist with sending boxes to deployed service men and women (150 from the Marion area). Additionally, hands-on projects of packing boxes and providing assistance for the families at their monthly meetings.

Sidney, Ohio

This year (2011) for the "Make a difference Day", the Sidney Altrusa Club, in conjunction with a downtown fall festival, handed out books at the local library. Stickers were placed in the books to state that they were donated by the Sidney Altrusa Club.

Battle Creek, Michigan

Altrusa Club of Battle Creek has been helping at the Ann J. Kellogg School in their Library. We have been assisting their Librarian in cataloging their books. Some schools have closed and as that has happened their books have been boxed up and sent to schools within the school district making it difficult to know exactly what the Library has on its shelves. We are helping to create an accurate data base for them. We have to do this when the students are not using the Library. We are enjoying this project!!
Altrusa of Troy fixed a luncheon for 120 people at First Place for the Make a Difference Day workers on Saturday, October 22. These workers painted at Lincoln Center, planted bulbs and raked leaves at the Troy Miami County Library, fixed faucets at Family Connection, and did odd jobs at Partners in Hope--all non-profit organizations in Troy. All the leftover food was delivered to Franklin House--a home for abused and/or homeless women and their families.
The Halloween party for the kids of Faith House in Lorain, Ohio, was hosted by Altrusa International of Lorain County on Make A Difference Day 2011.

Faith House, located in South Lorain, meets the needs of homeless single par-ents who, in cooperation with a variety of social agencies, journey on the road to self-sufficiency and independence.

The Altrusa Club of Findlay spent the morning at the public library assisting the Friends of the Library with their book sales in the Book Cellar. They then served dinner and filled food boxes at the City Mission.
For Make a Difference Day, Altrusa International of Branch County‘s Literacy Committee sponsored a ―Picture Me Reading‖ contest for area school-aged children in an effort to promote literacy. Contestants could enter a one hundred word essay discussing their favorite reading subject or submit a photograph catching someone reading or both.

To kick off the event ―Get Caught Reading‖ posters featuring national celebrities were given to each school and local library. The club was involved with the voting and winners were announced on Make A Difference Day. All seventeen schools as well as home-schoolers were invited to participate. Each winner received a $25 gift certificate from Coldwater‘s Taylor‘s Books & More. All participants were also registered for a grand prize drawing of an Amazon Kindle. All prizes are donated by Altrusa International of Branch County.

Tiffin, Ohio Altrusa invited librarians from 13 area libraries to come to a get-together, and to provide each of them with some much-needed funds for new books. The librarians were able to exchange ideas and worries, and they felt they got much more than money from the get-together.
