Literacy Beings at Home with Habitat for Humanity

Altrusa of Grand Rapids has adopted the children of homes being built by Habitat for Humanity.  We are attending and providing school supplies and books for the children of these Habitat homes. For families with children under the age of 6, we are also enrolling them in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library where they are sent an age appropriate book each month.

Homes currently being finished and dedicated are as follows:

September 26, 2017- 2 children

September 27, 2017 – 2 children

SEEDLINGS - Promoting Literacy in a different way

Imagine for a moment that you can’t go to a local bookstore or library to get books because they are not there.  Children who are blind face this every day because books written in Braille are not readily available in local bookstores or public libraries. At our November meeting we voted to donate $1,000 to Seedlings Braille Books for Children “Adopt A Reader” Program. Children who are registered in the program will receive a $100 certificate to purchase Braille books of their interest and reading level. Through this gift we are helping ten children in the City of Grand Rapids continue reading.
